Good at Being Good to Self

When you were little, and it was your birthday, did you always know what presents you wanted?

Didn’t you know, as a kid, what your favorite things would be? Whether it was roller skates, or an Easybake oven, or a Legos set, or a Transformer, or a superhero cake …

We knew as kids what favorite things would delight us, right?

And did you imagine that when you were the adult, when you were the one in charge making the decisions and holding the money, didn’t you imagine that you would have what you wanted?

Whether that was the case for you or not, here’s what I do know …

I talk to a lot of conscious creators who are not treating themselves very well at all when their birthdays roll around.

Many times when clients tell me it was their birthday and I ask what they did for it, they don’t have strong answers. Maybe dinner with a sweetie, or drinks with a friend. Mostly they tell me they don’t make a big deal of their birthday.

That’s fine, you don’t have to if you don’t feel like it …

But let’s remember that universe can only be as good to us as we are to ourselves!

What kind of precedent are we setting for the new year when we don’t treat ourselves well on our one most special day?

If it’s not a big deal for you, how do you expect the rest of the world to do right by you? When you’re setting such a low bar example!

And honestly, this isn’t something we should be doing one day a year. This is worth being good at every single day!

Every day asking yourself what you want and finding a way to give that to yourself. Because if you’re holding out on yourself you make it really hard for the rest of the world to deliver the goods.

Do you know how to be good to yourself? I know you know how to be good to me. You send the nice cards and the nice emails and post the generous reviews. Do you know how to turn that same love on yourself?

I’m not saying you have to make a big deal of your birthday, because honestly, I’d like to see you be good to yourself every day, not just on your birthday. But you gotta start somewhere, right? How about today?

How about today?! 🙂

How can the Universe be good to you if you aren’t? I like to tell myself I’m glad to wake up to a bright new day no matter what the weather is like and no I DON”T have to work hard for the money! Money loves me anyway.

Excellent article 🙂 One thing that might help anyone – if any of this seems difficult – is to focus on the things you already have (like right now or in your past) that you can celebrate or feel glad about.

Even if this is just “something bad didn’t happen”, even if it’s a comparison, even if its only a partial success or even if it is something a bit cynical, it can definitely be a way to get into this celebratory mood.

For example, the media here had – correctly – been predicting a heatwave. Initially, this scared me a bit – but I did a few techniques (eventually settling on practicing a mood of “Whew! Dodged something bad there!”, adding more sensory details to visualisations of cold weather etc…).

And, not only was there a couple of minutes of unexpected rain last night. But, when the hot weather arrived today, my area wasn’t as bad as I’d once feared it would be 🙂 Even the forecast for today is about 1-2 degrees Celsius lower than it had been about a couple of days ago. It isn’t quite the coldest part of the country, but it’s also far from the warmest either. Still, it feels amazing 🙂

It also – subjectively at least – feels less bad than previous heatwaves too. Even if the temperatures are either similar or possibly slightly higher. This is difficult to describe – but it just feels less “overwhelming” than hot weather used to. And, it certainly put me into a celebratory mood 🙂

As a lifecoach, I stress heavily to anyone that will listen, “ create your own oasis,” whatever that may look for you personally.
I create themes for my birthday, such as “ Turning 51 for 31 days, and journaled something special that I did for each day. 10 years later in 2022, my Beddian birthday will be celebrated this year. It is the year that I turn the age of my birth year.born in 1961 and I will be 61!

I have planned a full complete spa retreat to pamper myself from head to toe, which is my favorite indulgence but yet soo therapeutic. The best way we can provide meaning and purpose to the Universe is to provide the best US we can to bring out the best to our world!!!

I start every day by saying ” I thank the spirits for watching over me, this or something better, blessed be ” and ” my perfect outcome is on it’s way. Bless now what shows up and embrace it with gratitude” and ” I am a beautiful, spiritual, fun loving, globetrotting millionaire ” !

I just want to be able to wash my hair! I have one arm in a cast and it doesn’t come off until to-morrow. However my husband has worked a way to do it . I think I may keep him .

    • Jeannette says:

I’m glad you’ll be washing your hair cast-free soon, Anne! 🙂

      • Anne says:

Just came back from the hairdresser! Yay! Lovely people.
As Chris said: That is what WE are here for! Oh and the cast is off and while I do still have a split I am rapidly mending too!.

I am taking a rest day today because I am super tired. I am not going ANYWHERE. It can be difficult to do this on our culture, which seems to reward constant activity and productivity. But in reality, allowing myself to rest when needed/desired is essential and actually aids in creativity & inspired productivity (not just productivity because I feel like I have to).

    • Jeannette says:

I sure understand that gift, Erin! In fact, a client wrote this morning saying the thing she wanted more than anything was more white space in her calendar!

So glad you understand that these rests are a boon to our creativity and productivity! Enjoy your day off and thanks for posting your thoughts here! 🙂

    • Anne M Robertson says:

Rest is its own reward Erin and busyness is not necessarily all that productive so be still and just literally “BE”.
